Feeling horrified that the war he started led to the death of 100,000 people, Ashoka adopted policies that centered on non-violence and peace. He declared that all humans are born free, all are equal, all deserve dignity and rights. He even took measures to protect animals, making him one of the first known animal rights activists.
He conquered territories, gave up war and violence, freed prisoners, restored people's land, practiced Buddhism, made hospitals, said no to hunting, wells were dug, said no to thirst and hunger for people and animals, issued laws, made people spread Buddhism outside of India(missionaries).
Asoka created stone pillars and also created shelters for animals. The pillars had inscriptions on them about nonviolence.
