It was more what New Zealand offered, it was a new world, a new start, many people left for NZ so they could live and worship as they pleased.

The Treaty of Waitangi was signed in 1840, which gave most of the natives' land to Britain. Therefore Britain obtained land, resources, while giving protection to the native Maoris.
