What did Captain Nemo do with the money he collected?

In the Verne novel the submarine commander-Pirate, donated some of his loot to charity, of course, anonymously ( why tip off the Navy and Coast Guard!) In the novel and some of the movies, he does not have any love interest other than his Mission-and the Submarine.

The last of his wealth, what didn't go down with Captain Nemo at his death, was given over to the castaways on his island, the bulk of which was supposedly used to by a large tract of land in Iowa.
