When King Gustavus Adolphus of Sweden landed in Germany in 1630, he led an army of approximately 13,000 troops. He was initially hampered by his lack of cavalry and his insistence that he created a firm base of operations before advancing.
Swedish King Gustavus Adolphus began a series of victories in 1631. He began his march on January 29, 1681 and advanced toward Demmin. In less than six weeks he captured six towns. This included the powerful Demmin itself which was well fortified and had a large number of troops. Part of the latter victory was due to an incompetent royal commander.
