Charlemange went on 55 military campaigns and conquered a large amount of Europe. The Carolingian Empire was the biggest Europe would see until Napoleon. He was a Christian emperor, and as such he "Christianized" the territories he conquered whether they wished to convert or not.

AnswerCharlemagne, aka Charles the Great, the son of Pepin the Short. He inherited the Kingdom, along with his brother, of what would become France and modern Europe. His brother died three years later. Charles was a great ruler, and a devout Catholic. He attended daily Mass and Vespers, cared for the Church, the purity of clerical morals, and the education of the clergy. He organized a very efficient governmental structure and insisted on essential legal principles. Everything was written down, as opposed to tribal oral laws, and it was all based on Christian principles. He was a huge proponent of learning and education and the art of writing made great strides under his impetus. His name was even given to this new art of writing call Carolingian Minuscule. He formed Europe into a Christian Empire and eventually was crowned by Pope Leo on Christmas Day as Holy Roman Emperor. To quote from Diane Moczar's book, Ten Dates Every Catholic Should Know: That unique thing known as Western Civilization was born of three elements: Christianity, Classical culture, and the traditions of the peoples of Europe.

The "Dark Ages" were ending, and a glorious Catholic Europe was about to stride onto the world stage.
