There were hundreds of riveters hired when Titanic was built. They usually worked in teams of 4. Two to hammer the rivet into place and two to push from the other side so the two pieces stay together when the rivet is hit by the hammer.

I believe a shoe riveter in the 19th century worked in the shoe making industry. Riveter may mean the holes where laces were put. My Great Grandfather worked in the shoe industry in the late 1800's as a shoe maker as well. Hope this is correct.
