Black codes were passed to keep freedmen( formerly enslaved people) in a condition similar to slavery. They had to be indoors at a certain time--therefore they had a curfew. Black children could be whipped or beaten by anyone if they didn't accept apprenticeships. It was also mandatory that African Americans had to pay a yearly labor contract.
