MORE ABOUT THE TITANIC...
Why_did_Titanic_hit_the_iceberg_sideways_instead_of_head_on...The titanic did not hit head on because the boat crew knew that the titanic was desiegned to hit boats head on not icebergs the iceberg was many times bigger then the titanic.the size of the iceberg was so enormous that almost all experts in engeneering all agree that the force of a head on collision would have been so great the titanic would have sunk with in minits instead of 2 hours if it would have hit head on.
the force would have a rippling effect and would have traveled from the tip of the ship all across its bulkhead breaking rivets from bow to stern causing catostophic damage killing many more people then it did
When the ship hit the iceberg, the captain was off duty and asleep, leaving the second-in-command on the bridge. We are all human, we all need sleep.
Even though the majority of people didn't believe Titanic was sinking, because they claimed the ship was unsinkable, Smith still ordered his crew to uncover and prepare the lifeboats, those who argued with him that Titanic is unsinkable were given a stern telling off for disobeying orders and warned to obey. Smith also ordered distress calls to be sent out before the ship even began sinking (Titanic was designed to stay afloat if water got in, however a design flaw meant that it actually dipped underwater nose first due to the weight of the water and snapped in half).
Later it turned out that Smith was obviously right and that if the lifeboats were not prepared when he ordered them to be, there would have been far fewer survivors.
While the ship was sinking, according to reports, Smith commanded his crew and kept them organised and made sure the telecoms crew were doing the best they can to send distress calls. He also made the decision to let women and children off the ship first, because he knew there was not enough lifeboats to save everyone.
Smith did everything a captain should and could do to keep his crew calm and evacuate the ship.
Ignore the ending to the popular Titanic movie with Leonardo Di Caprio - that's all Hollywood fiction made purely for entertainment rather than historical fact. Smith did not retreat to the bridge to die in shame. He actually died in the act of keeping his crew together and helping people get off. Like a true British captain, he refused to leave the ship until rescue came (which was too late by then) - so he went down with it, drowning with the people he tried to save. It is not known exactly where he died, but we do know that he was constantly running between the decks saving people and the radio room to see if anybody responded to the distress calls, so he died in one of those locations or in between.
So in summary, he did everything he could possibly do, keeping his crew organised, helping people evacuate, getting out distress calls and so on. If his officers pleaded that he should get in a lifeboat to safety, he ignored them and refused to abandon the people on board. To be able to keep people organised and calm under that amount of pressure is a remarkable feat for any human being. Captain Smith died a hero, refusing to give up.
Captain smith went down with the ship then about 6 days later they found him on the top of the water
Captain Smith was spotted in many places during the sinking, which makes a timeline that shows that he was very proactive, not apathetic as suggested in the big movie.
