You must be referring to Rafe Hollister. There was no Ray Howlinger. Rafe was a moonshiner with a great tenor voice played by Jack Prince. Rafe competes against Barney in a singing contest. We never see Barney sing but Rafe sings 'Lonesome Road' and 'New River Train' accompanied by Andy on guitar.
