What did children do for fun in the 1800's?

Young children played games such as tag, hide and seek, hopscotch, Wrestling and foot racing, blind man's bluff and fox and geese. Slightly older children would have played games like checkers, marbles, pick up sticks and drawing on a slate. Ball games were also extremely popular with boys, but girls did not consider these types of games to be particularly ladylike, although the minority did join in with these games. Girls also enjoyed skipping and playing with dolls, whereas boys would go hunting and fishing and build tree houses. Children were believed to have read more books than they do in the present day. The 'Katy' books by Susan Coolidge and the 'Uncle Remus' stories by Joel Chandler Harris were particularly popular at the time.

Children in the 1850s did much the same activities as children in any time period; they were educated, did chores, and played, just as any child would.

(Of course, the level of education and chores done varied depending on your social status.) Popular toys for little boys were toy guns, trains, toy soldiers, and more "masculine" items. China dolls, paper dolls, and doll houses were all good for little girls. They also played outside; games like leap-frog and hopscotch (under different names) existed in some form back then. Children also read and 'scrap-booked' (they would cut out pictures from magazines and advertisements and paste them into albums, then decorate the collages with ribbons and sequins and the like). Girls might also have practised their sewing and embroidery skills and made samplers.
