Armstrong's colleagues in the astronaut office respected his talent and cool headedness ,both from his harrowing Gemini VIII flight where a thruster malfunctioned, which could have been disastrous if not for Neil's ability to stay calm under intense pressure, as well as his narrowly escaping injury or death when the LLRV malfunctioned, forcing him to eject while only 100 or so feet off the ground.

After the lunar landing he and Buzz were, and are, widely considered heroes.
