Sioux in the Great Plains lived in tepees. These tepees allowed them to follow the buffalo that they hunted. Like all Indians they weren't wasteful and used every part of the buffalo. Tepees were actually made of buffalo hide. They moved the tepees with poles called travois. One tepee could use up to forty buffalo. Tepees had special marking so it was easy to identify the family that lived there.

The main area occupied by the Sioux forms the present day states of Nebraska, South Dakota and North Dakota. The Mandan and Hidatsa tribes of Minnetsota are closely linked to the Sioux. The Sioux hunted in present day Canada, Montana, Wyoming and more but their settlements were mainly in the US northern plains states.

"Sioux" is not the name of a tribe but three groups of related tribes speaking dialects of the same language. The three groups are called Lakota, Nakota and Dakota.

Today these tribes all live on reservations in North and South Dakota, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Montana, Minnesota and Nebraska.
