KKiowa chiefs had to be high and great warrior's, Kiowa chiefs had many wife's, and children. It was not unusual for a chief to get a divorce to one of his wives. The older ones are usually the chief's, of by the chief his oldest son would be next if he was in the bloodline. The chief was The tribe's leader for battles like the ones with the french. If the chief died the chief's family would die with him. A chief could never be a woman. Only the most rare kinds of times that would happen.

Because of their early contact with Europeans the Shawnee had access to many trade goods including cloth and ready-made clothing items such as shirts, skirts and dresses. Some items such as moccasins and buckskin leggings continued to be worn, but trade cloth quickly took over from other traditional garments.

Shawnee men originally wore a soft-tanned buckskin breechclout with short flaps front and back; deerskin leggings came to above the knee, with garters below each knee to keep them up and fringes along the side seams. Women wore a wrap-around skirt, sometimes with short leggings and a poncho-like tunic in cool weather, but in summer they wore nothing above the waist. Moccasins had a seam along the instep with quillwork decoration and a small cuff.

Men generally wore their hair shaved or plucked off at the front and long at the back with feathers attached; a small number wore the "roach" style with most of the head shaved leaving a central strip. Women wore their hair loose or in a single braid at the back, fastening with a leather strip or a hair ornament.

When they adopted European shirts, dresses and other garments certain native elements were retained: ear ornaments, face paint and some tattoos. Men's ears in particular were seriously cut and disfigured to allow for huge hoops, rings and ear wheels, or even a bunch of feathers through the ear lobes.

Men took finger-woven sashes and wrapped them around their heads like a turban, or wore deerskin caps like European night-caps.

Shawnee warriors favoured large shell disks hanging like pendants on their chests.
