The scarecrow received a diploma. According to Oz, the only thing separating Scarecrow from other great thinkers was this diploma, so he gave him one. The Scarecrow immediately started stating the Pythagorean theorem (incorrectly, by the way) and was delighted with his "new brain".

In the book by author and Oz series originator Lyman Frank Baum [May 15, 1856-May 5, 1919], the Scarecrow received a "bran-new" brain that the Wizard of Oz had stuffed with bran, needles, and pins. In the posthumous 1939 film version, he received a diploma that granted him an honorary Th.D., or Doctorate in Thinkology.
