After Titanic sank White Star line made changes to the Olympic and Britannic (which was just beginning to be built) to make them safer. Apart from that White Star Line continued to operate although the chairman of White Star Line Bruce Ismay was heavily criticized after the sinking because as the owner of the ship he was expected to go down with it.

In the aftermath of the sinking of the Titanic, several aspects of the ship presented features that may have contributed to the eventual great loss of life, or even to the loss of the ship. These included :

  • The provision of insufficient lifeboats - while there were actually more than required at the time, they were far too few for the total number of passengers. The statutory numbers were originally designed for ships with far fewer persons aboard. The cost of providing crewmen to handle them was the likeliest deterrent, because the davits that held the lifeboats were rated for 4 times as many boats as actually provided.
  • The rudder, while suited to the ship's size, was of an antiquated design and could have been made to be more efficient in a wider variety of turning modes.
  • The watertight bulkheads did not extend high enough to prevent flooding over their tops. This was an accommodation to the passenger decks, which extended well below the waterline.
  • The most crucial failure was the lack of reinforcement of major sections of the hull plating. This was later rendered mostly unnecessary by double hulls.

The combination of all these inadequacies, and more, was the collision, sinking, and large number of fatalities. Had the collision been avoided, the extent of flooding limited, or the time to sinking extended, more if not all of the passengers would have survived.

The White Star Line did not build ships but they did commission and administer them.

Titanic was one of three Olympic-Class Vessels that were built to compete in the lucrative business of transatlantic travel.

Until that time, the trade was dominated by Cunard's Lusitania and Mauretania (and a third German firm).
