The Pan-American highway extends from Alaska, through Canada all the way to South America, well almost but it does go to Mexico. There are no single highways that travel between Canada and Mexico but several networks or routes one can take. These include or are often called Superhighways.

First you would have to travel west and then go south from Texas.

To go to the Gulf of Mexico from Rhode Island, you would travel South by Southwest.

That depends on what part of the US you are in and what part of Canada you are going to. If you are in Alaska, Canada is east and south. If you are in Maine, Canada is west and north.

You would travel northeast from Santa Fe, New Mexico to Minneapolis, Minnesota.
You travel East from almost anywhere in Alaska to get to Canada. The Exception being if you were in, say, Juneau (The Capitol) (or anywhere else in that dogleg of Alaska) You could then travel, only by Plane, EITHER North, South or East, depending on where in Canada you wish to go.
