There are two separate species of Dotterel in New Zealand, the Northern and the Southern. These are wading birds.
The Southern species, the Banded Dotterel, (Charadrius bicinctus) has a distinct band across the lower throat, and a white chest and belly. It is found all over NZ, including the Auckland Islands and the Chatham islands. But may be absent from Fiordland.
The New Zealand Dotterel (Charadrius obscurus) as the northern species is known, has no band as the above, and has a fully coloured chest and belly. These are uncommon.
