Sports like mountain climbing, hiking, rock climbing and other sports that involve an explorational and physical element, and indeed an element of adventure. They are competitive, but not in the same way as some other sports are. You are competing against each other, but also having to overcome natural obstacles, like in climbing, or weather, as an integral part of the sport. There is also a lot more variety. In something like athletics, a racing track is standard and the same no matter where you are, but in an adventure sport, each location is different. Climbing one mountain is different to climbing any other mountain, and even climbing the same mountain on more than one occasion can be different on each occasion, so you can never be sure what to expect each time. That is where the adventure element comes in to adventure sports.
