To become a commercial maker, there are several things you MUST have, and a few others that you SHOULD have.
1. You must have video editing software such as Sony Vegas, Apple Final Cut, etc. - You need professional video editing software that allows you to see the 'Safe' areas of the video. Consumer video editing software like Windows Movie Maker will not do, because the final output video will have the edges cut off when viewed on TV. Professional NLE's (non-linear editing software) display lines around the video called the 'safe title' area, so you can see what will be displayed on TV. Professional NLE's also allow you to create the types of effects and transitions that businesses expect.
2. You must have a computer capable of editing video- Not all computers have the capacity to edit video, because it takes up a lot of resources. You need a computer with above average RAM, at least a processor speed of 7200 rpm, and above average hard drive space.
3. You must have access to royalty free music libraries- You cannot use music that you do not own unless you get a license for it. Commercials that use popular songs are paying lots of money to use that song. However, you can purchase royalty free music libraries that include the license to use the music as you wish. You can find these online.
4. You must have the ability to provide professional voiceovers for your commercials- Many commercials contain the voice of an unseen person. This is a 'voiceover', and they are easy to find online. VO artists can record your voiceover, and send it to you as an mp3.
5. You should have a professional camera, such as a Canon GL2. You cannot show up to shoot a commercial with just a camcorder, you won't be taken seriously, and the quality will not be good. Professional cameras have 3 chips (3ccd), and give great resolution. You can find pro cameras for as low as $2500.
6. You should have a shotgun microphone or wireless lapel mic. This allows you to record your subjects from a distance, and still sound like they are a foot from the camera. Shotgun mics pick up the sound that is right in from of them, filtering out sounds from the sides. Lapel mics are small, and clip on the shirt.
7. You should have a DVD burner to put your commercial on DVD for tv stations and dub houses. A dub house can put your commercial on a Beta SP tape, which many television stations require.
8. You should have a library of stock video clips and images. Not all commercials will require you to shoot video. Many times you can use pre-shot video called 'stock video' related to the subject of your commercial. For instance, a commercial about a cleaning service can include stock video and images of maids, people cleaning, a happy family at home, and non-descript service vans. You can find stock video libraries online.
9. This should be at the top, but here it is...you must have knowledge of production, editing, and rendering. You know what production and editing are. Rendering is the process of turning your edited video production into a video file. Until you render it, it is just a mass of sound and images. Rendering is sort of akin to baking. You put the cake mix in the pan, but it's not actually a cake until you cook it.
