He meant that he cannot stop living even if he lost Johnny, his close friend. He knew that Ponyboy is smart and he could get into college if he worked hard or else he would trash like them.
Darry doesn't want Ponyboy to give up on life. He wants Ponyboy to have a successful life, not just stay a greaser his whole life.
In the Outsiders, Darrel is described as Ponyboy's older brother. Darrel is usually called 'Darry' by his brothers (Ponyboy and Sodapop) and the other Greasers. Darry is in a gang called the 'Greasers' who fight with the gang on the west side of town called the 'Socs'. The Greasers live on the east side of town, and Darry is one of the toughest or 'tuffest' Greasers. *I hope that answers your question. Basically, Darry is Ponyboy's older brother. (Ponyboy is the main character who's writing the story in his journal). Thanks for reading this!*
The Curtis Brothers were afraid that Ponyboy was going to be taken away from Darry. Darry was a good older brother, and he even quit school to raise Soda and Pony since their parents died in a car accident. Luckily, their worse fear didn't happen. (:
After leaving the movie with Johnny and falling asleep in the lot, Ponyboy rushes home. There Pony explains to his eldest brother, Darry, about how he fell asleep in the lot with Johnny. Darry tells Ponyboy how worried him and Soda were and how he couldn't even call the cops or Soda and Pony would be put in a boy's home 'so fast it'd make your head spin.' Darry loses his cool when Pony sticks up for Soda then slaps Pony. Ponyboy runs straight to Johnny and tells him that they're running away. Johnny says nothing and follows until both are out of breath and quit running. Pony is crying by now and Johnny is trying to calm him down. Johnny and Ponyboy go to the park where a group of Socs in a blue Mustang pull up. Johnny, haunted by the memory of blue Mustangs and rings, becomes scared. Ponyboy says to play it cool. They find out its Bob and Randy, Cherry and Marcia's boyfriends with a few friends. All are drunk and begin to fight the two after Ponyboy, in his defence, spits on the Socs. The Socs attempt to drown Ponyboy in the water fountain and Johnny stabs Bob out of self defence and saving Ponyboy from drowning.
Soda runs out because he is sick and tired of all the fighting. He understands both sides and loves each of his brothers equally, but he feels as if they are trying to make him take sides and he can't do that. He tells Darry to stop being so hard on Ponyboy and he tells pony to use his head, he makes them agree to stop fighting and they do, then they hug, and then they go home.(Read the book and watch the movie, they will help and are totally awesome! Johnny is so hot!)
Roulan left during the middle of the show, and when you quit the show that means you quit the show- and since the finale is part of the show, that meant he would quit that also.
