Ponyboy thinks of himself as less thatn everybody else. During the book this changes to not realizing who he really is to believing that everyone has different things about them, and how this doesn't make them inferior.

Greasers were know for their long heavily greased hair, it was their pride and joy. When Ponyboy gets his hair cut he basically loses his identity/pride. Plus Ponyboy was known for having the best "tuff" hair.
