In New Zealand 'Grievance Industry' is a racist term used to express contempt for Maori, the indigenous people. By falsely portraying Maori as lazy and greedy, 'Grievance industry' vilifies Maori efforts to redress past injustices through the pursuit of their legal rights under the Treaty of Waitangi, the founding document of New zealand. 'Grievance Industry' not only denigrates Maori but also the Treaty of Waitangi and the ideals upon which the nation, New Zealand, was founded. Used by hateful and ignorant people 'Grievance Industry' mocks and trivialises a minority culture's struggle for existence. It is also used elsewhere in the world to attack minority cultures and other groups suffering political inequality.
An example of this racist expression in use can be found on this very site, on the message board of the NZ category supervisor. On the 30th of July at 9:23 pm the contributor suma rongi uses the line "the grievance industry is alive and well" to disparage a Maori contributor, who has dared to improve one of suma rongi's answers, by deliberately attacking their ethnicity.
