A generalisation is an idea or statement which is can be applied universally. The word is usually used when specific examples are being used as a basis of a generalisation. A gross generalisation is an extreme case and use of the phrase is normally critical. An example of a gross generalisation is "All Italians make good lovers". Some are but that doesn't mean they all are.
