Its 1902 actually - but I too would love to know why it focuses on that date at the end of the film.

I just did a little more digging and came across the following information...

Apparently, the director mentions it on the commentary track of the DVD, going so far as to say that he insisted upon it, but without any further explanation.

Which is nice...!

However a few post relate to the fact that in 1902, the dwindling bison herd in Yellowstone park became the first protected species in the United States.

My personal belief though is in relation to the fact that in 1902 there were several breakthroughs regarding genetics (chromosomes and hereditary genetics).

But guess we will never know!
