This is my interpretation of the Japanese proverb "The indigo dyer wears white trousers": The indigo dyer knows that traditional methods of preparing the dye are toxic, and therefore seeks to minimize his exposure to it - even as he happily sells his (possibly still toxic) products to others. In my opinion, the proverb expresses a slightly cynical frame of mind.
