Lyman is what the letter 'L' stands for. But author L Frank Baum [May 15, 1856-May 6, 1919] never went willingly by his first name. Instead, he preferred to be called 'Frank' by those with whom he was on a first name basis.

The author and originator of the Oz book series was named after his father's brother. It was a case of liking the person, but not the name. Out of respect to his uncle, Baum kept the first name as an initial.
