The meaning of the name Darren, or Darin, is unknown but it seems to be a recently created name. Darren was first use by Darren McGavin, an American actor born in 1922. It seems to have come to public attention as the name of a character in the American TV comedy, Bewitched (made during the 1960s).

As Darin, it is associated with the popular American singer, Bobby Darin, who was born in 1936 and named Walden Robert Cassotto. He reportedly chose the name "Darin" from a telephone directory.

Darren is considered to be a male name. The female equivalent is Darrene.

The name Darren also appears to have early Gaelic origins as the name is used as a place name in Wales and specifically for two valleys: Black Darren & Red Darren (Darren means edge in Welsh), west of Longtown. What's more curious is that after several decades of 'name origins' being a popular subject with the public in general and with thousands of books and web pages dedicated to the subject, I appear to be the only person who has ever made this connection?

Darren is thought to come from Darrell, which means 'One who comes from d'Arielle'. D'Arielle is an area in France.

Historians are not certain of the name 'Darren's etymological origins. Often found in Scottish communities, there are some theories that its origins are Gaelic meaning 'great.'

It could be a variant on the French surname D'Airelle (meaning of [or from] Airelle).

I've checked two websites on this, though the accuracy of either is not set in stone. Behindthename.com doesn't know for certain, attributing it to being a variation of the name Darren. According to Babynames.com Darian means 'Upholder of the Good', with Darien giving a more vague answer, alluding to a city in Panama.
