The Check Engine light comes on when the computer detects a problem with the emissions system. It can be a minor problem such as a loose gas cap or it can be something serious. The car is not going to blow up but some problems can cause damage to the catalytic converter or O2 sensors. Take it to your mechanic and they will connect an OBD2 scanner to the car which will tell them where to start looking for the problem. Do not just ignore this or you may end up spending more for repairs.

∙ 7y agoIt means there's some issue which needs to be correct. A MIL simply means there's a malfunction.. amber generally indicates a more minor issue... a red "stop engine" lamp indicates a much more pressing matter. However, don't assume the amber light means you can blow it off... a minor issue uncorrected can very easily become a major issue in time.

∙ 7y agoIt means your car needs attention soon but if the light is flashing it means it needs attention NOW! If you continue to drive the vehicle with the check engine light flashing you can cause serious and expensive damage to the emission system. Either way it's not going to blow up but the repair bill might get bigger if you ignore it.
