Dust and haze in the atmosphere dims stars by one to two magnitudes, depending on location; at its worst, it was sometimes difficult even to see the Sun or Moon in Los Angeles.

However, even CLEAR air dims stars by 1/2 to 1 magnitude. Look at the stars on a clear night in Kansas (elevation about 600 feet) and then travel to the high elevations of the Rocky Mountains or Montana's Bitterroot Mountains. Even when compared to perfectly clear air in the plains, the mountain stars are breathtaking in their brilliance - and number!

Of course, when viewed from space, as the Hubble Space Telescope does, an additional 1 magnitude is gained. So even though the Hubble is much smaller than mountain-top telescopes here on Earth, the view from the Hubble is spectacular.

Earthquakes affect the atmosphere by creating amounts of dust which add to the air that we breathe. Earthquakes can also trigger volcanoes which will release tonnes of ashes and other particulates into the atmosphere. This can sometimes cause the blocking out of the sun (cooling effect), air pollution and an increased amount of carbon in the air (warming effect).
