Juan Valdez and his mule
Yes they only breed with their breed. The above is only partly true. A donkey is a breed, or species (Equuis asines), It, therefore, can breed true - that is, a male and a female donkey will produce another donkey. However, a donkey can interbreed with a horse as follows:A female horse (mare), and a male donkey will produce a mule.A male horse (stallion), and a female donkey will produce a hinny.
A Mule is the result of sexual reproduction between a donkey and a horse. Due to the mismatching chromosome number of the two parent species, the mule itself has 63 chromosomes, a mixture of horse and donkey DNA. Because of this, the natural process that produces reproductive cells rarely works properly in mules, the chromosomes in a fertilized cell rarely pair up properly. However reproduction is not impossible, there are documented (and very rare) cases of female mules producing offspring when mated with a purebred donkey or horse. Male mules themselves are always sterile.
A mule is the offspring resulting from the mating of a male donkey with a female horse, or mare. When the 'opposite' pairing of the parents' genders occurs; that is, the mating of a male horse, or stallion, with a female donkey, known as a "jenny" the resulting offspring is more appropriately referred to as a "hinny". The characteristics of a mule versus a hinny are indeed different, as is found in other crossbred animals where the parents' gender has such an effect with one notable example being the difference between a tigon, or a liger, each the offspring of a tiger and lion pair.

In Greek mythology, Hephaestus, the god of fire and craftsmanship, was often associated with the animal of the donkey. The donkey symbolized humility, hard work, and endurance, traits that were reflected in Hephaestus' character as a skilled artisan and forger of weapons. Additionally, the donkey was considered a sacred animal to Hephaestus and was sometimes depicted pulling his chariot.
