"Moonlight," a story in three parts about the life and hard times of a black protagonist named Chiron, was named Best Picture of 2016 at the 89th Academy Awards. The film was directed by Barry Jenkins, who shared a Best Adapted Screenplay Oscar with playwright Tarell Alvin McCraney.

In the film, the character of Chiron is played as a child by Alex Hibbert, as a teenager by Ashton Sanders and as a young adult by Trevante Rhodes. The drama also stars André Holland, Naomie Harris, Mahershala Ali and singer Janelle Monáe. Ali won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for his performance.
