For dessert, a chocolate sponge cake log called a bûche de Noël is normally eaten. The Christmas meal is eaten late on Christmas Eve or early Christmas morning after returning from the midnight church services.
In parts of France, 13 different desserts are served. All are made from different types of fruits, nuts, and pastries.
