In this chapter, Shmuel is rounded up by Lieutenant Kotler and made to polish the glasses at Bruno's home. Lieutenant Kotler leaves the room, and Bruno is delighted to find Shmuel sitting at the kitchen table polishing. Bruno eats and shares some with Shmuel.

Lieutenant Kotler re-enters the room and discovers that Shmuel has eaten. He accuses the boy of stealing food from the commandant, but he claims that Bruno gave it to him. Unfortunately, when questioned by Kotler, Bruno denies that he even knows Shmuel.
