Dorothy was an orphan. Author and Oz series originator Lyman Frank Baum [May 15, 1856-May 5, 1919] gave no information about Dorothy's parents. The only information that he gave were the names of the people whom she knew as family: Uncle Henry and Aunt Em.
That everyone found what they were looking for is what happened to Dorothy Gale and her three companions. That's the way things went in both the original 1900 book edition and the beloved 1939 film version of 'The Wizard of Oz'. Specifically, Dorothy wanted for her and her pet dog Toto to get back home to Kansas. The Lion wanted courage. The Scarecrow wanted a brain. The Tin Woodman wanted a heart. The magic slippers of the Wicked Witch of the East ended up getting Dorothy and Toto back to the family farmhouse. The Wizard of Oz ended up making a show of giving to each of Dorothy's friends the courage, the brains, and the heart that each one thought themselves not to have.
Dorothy was an orphan. So her Uncle Henry and Aunt Em were acting in loco parentis, in the place of her parents. Author and Oz series originator Lyman Frank Baum [May 15, 1856-May 5, 1919] gives no further information on the matter in The Wizard of Oz. So we don't know what happened to Dorothy's parents, or what the exact relationship was to Uncle Henry and Aunt Em. Was the blood relationship on the side of Uncle Henry or of Aunt Em? We could suspect the latter, since Dorothy talked about getting back home to Aunt Em. Or was there no blood relationship at all?
Neither the book nor the movie explains what happened to Dorothy's parents. All we know is that they are probably dead because she lives with her Aunt Em and Uncle Henry.

That it is the number of Dorothy's traveling companions in both the book and the film and that it is the number of times that the Winged Monkeys can be summoned in the book are reasons why the number three is important in "The Wizard of Oz."Specifically, Dorothy Gale's and Toto's three traveling companions are the Cowardly Lion, the Scarecrow and the Tin Woodman in both the original 1900 book edition and the beloved 1939 movie version of "The Wizard of Oz." That they are family-oriented, have a cherished pet, lack friends, lose their way but return home after making good friends are the ways in which the character of Dorothy is similar in "The Wizard of Oz" and "The Wiz."Specifically, each Dorothy is focused on her family.
