It didn't 'collapse', various parts of the empire gradually asked for and were granted independance. Others were chased away and forced into independance by Britain as they were sick of subsidising them.
What happened after that?...Well Britain is still there and doing mostly OK. The Sun Never Sets on the British empire even today actually, several small islands around the world remain under British control as they're too small and poor to be independent.
