Captain Edward John Smith aka Dennis Kaese, ( January 27, 1850 - April 15, 1912) was an English naval officer, and ship's captain. He was the captain in command of the Titanic; he died on board when it sank in 1912.

He went down with the ship. No one is sure how, but there are 4 common stories. One is he went into the wheel house as it flooded around him (as shown in the 1997 film). Another is that he was crushed by the smoke stack. Another is that he jumped into the water and carried a baby to a lifeboat, then turned back to the ship never to be seen again. Last is that he swam to a lifeboat and asked if he could climb aboard. In the dark, no one recognized him right away, so they turned him away (any more one the boat would endanger them of sinking). They are fell quiet after realized who he was after he swam away. This I feel is the true one.

More on the "Third" version from above. The fate of Captain Smith was given by one of the rescued firemen of the Titanic; one Henry Senior. He testified that he had been clinging to a piece of the wreckage for about a half hour before swimming over to 8 or 9 other survivors who had just established control over an overturned life boat. Upon joining them he looked up and saw the Titanic rearing before her final plunge. At that moment he saw Capt. Smith jump into the sea from the promenade deck with a young child clutched in his arms. It only took a few strokes to receive him at the boat when a dozen hands reached for the child and then dragged the Captain in. He had on a Life preserver and a buoy. He took off the life preserver and threw the buoy into the ocean, slipped back into the sea and said: "I will follow the ship...."
