Critics usually discard the subplot of The Changeling as they don't think it is relevant to the main plot in the play, however if they paid attention they would realise that it is actually crucial in reflecting the themes of the main plot.

Isabella, for example is completely the opposite of Beatrice as she doesn't just except that someone is in love with her, such as Antonio, because of her beauty, instead she disguises herself as a madwoman and confronts him.

So the point of the subplot, contrary to critics popular opinion, is to emphasise the fact that the real mad people aren't in the asylum but instead in the real world.
