James Hanratty, who was found guilty of the A6 murder of Michael Gregsten in 1961, was hanged at Bedford prison. The case was highly controversial at the time, as there appeared to be genuine grounds for doubt over the safety of the conviction. The case undoubtedly increased public concern about the death penalty in the UK which was abolished in 1965.
