Eiichiro Oda was inspired by the work of Akira Toriyama, the Japanese mangaka who created Dragonball. He also said that his interest and love for pirates most likely came from a TV show he used to watch called Vicky the Viking. Some of the characters were known as "viking pirates", such as Sven the Terrible. It is thought that this may also be why Oda's giants from Elbaf look like oversized vikings.

I also recall him answering to fans, saying he'd wanted to be a manga artist since the young age of around 4, when he first learnt that you could draw for a living.
