ajax and diomedes are considered the second best Greeks next to Achilles, however both of these heroes are more noble, brave and respectful than Achilles. ajax fights hector to duel early in the iliad, and through out the book both heroes try to kill each, both are unsuccesful, though on occassions both heroes get the upper hand on one another, hector forces ajax to retreat several times and also breaks ajax's spear. however ajax also forces hector to retreat on one occasion when he throws a huge boulder at hector. diomedes is also a great fighter but not as good in my opinion as ajax or hector, he always needs the help of odyesseus and like wise odyesseus always needs diomedes's help. ajax and hector fight alone, relying on their own skill. Achilles i would like to point out is not brave, he doesnt fight for most of the iliad, and has no fear of death, that by definition does not define a hero, he doesnt care about anyone or anything expect his feelings and perhaps patroclus.
Patroclus is Achilles friend in the Illiad.
Briseis drives the plot of the Illiad; his telling of his weakness to Polyxena is how he dies.
AnswerIn the Illiad it is Apollo who guides Paris's arrow to Achilles heel. From Atlantis01: His mother and the rest of the Gods, including Charon, the ferryman on the river styxFrom Tejones: Achilles is not killed in the Iliad. His death takes place at the end of the Aethiopis. The significance of the "weak spot" is arguable, and the origin of the story appears to be late. Homer knows nothing about it. Moreover, since Achilles was a mortal fated to be killed by the archer god, the entry point of the arrow is, at least, a secondary issue.
Hector's main role in The Iliad was that of killing and dishonoring Achilles' best friend, Patroclus. This engraged Achilles and led him to seek revenge.

He was on the Greek side (rather than just Spartan), but to confuse matters, The Illiad refers to two Greek armies-Agamemnon's and Achilles'.
Both the Illiad and the Odyssey. The Illiad was the story about the War of Troy, featured Achilles more than Odysseus. The Odyssey is about Odysseus' return to Ithaca, his land. Which took...10 years I believe?

Patroclus is Achilles friend in the Illiad.
It is taken from the story 'the Illiad'. The hero Achilles had been dipped in the sacred river by his mother to make invulnerable to weapon attack; all of him got this power except his heel, which she was holding. So an Achilles heel is the weak spot.
Briseis drives the plot of the Illiad; his telling of his weakness to Polyxena is how he dies.
I can't answer that completely, but I can say, in the Illiad, Achilles died of a wound to his heel.
