"Lion of God"

"Ariel is an Archangel's name from the Hebrew אֲרִיאֵל "Lion of God." Archangels are the highest rank of angels. Archangel Ariel is known as the angel of healing and new beginnings in English culture.

At one time the name was given in The Bible as a designation for Jerusalem". "Ariel" in some Hebrew texts also describes both a "spirit of the air" and a "water sprite". The "water sprite" meaning was taken up by Disney Studios as a name for the Little Mermaid series. There also is a character called "Ariel" in Shakespeare's "The Tempest", an air sprite that serves the magician Prospero and who is the guardian of innocence. Ariel is also the name given to one of the moons that circle the planet Uranus. It was named after a character in "Rape of the Lock" by the English writer Alexander Pope.

In Israel the name is usually given to boys but it has now become a unisex name elsewhere."
