What is Dally's relationship with Johnny?

Since Johnny was the only thing Dally ever loved, he got himself killed but robbing a convience store. He then called the gang for help. When the police caught up with him and Pony and the others arrived, he pulled out a gun that wasn't loaded. Thinking that it was loaded, the police shot and killed Dally.

Dally's girls have all cheated on him and he's never had a real relationship with his mom or dad, but Johnny practically changes Dally. Dally softens around Johnny and he feels the need to protect him and save Johnny's innocence. Its not like a gay relationship or anything, but they have a really strong friendship bond. Dallas watches Johnny over like a parent and when he gets upset that Johnny wants to turn himself in and that Johnny goes into the church, he was showing his protective side. Basically, Dally is so hard and he senses that innocence in Johnny he never had, and he doesn't want Johnny to turn into him. That's why Dallas is so affected by his death because he knows the only thing he loved was gone. So he had to be with him.
