Jayden's Rescue aims to be a story that, like Norton Juster's Phantom Tollbooth, leads young readers to discover the wonders of knowledge. In this case, it is math alone that is the focus of the book.
The plot follows three friends, Alex, Vanessa, and Sam, who must solve a series of math problems. The problems are found in a magical book that appears without any explanation on Alex's bookshelf In the story within that book, the imprisoned Queen Jayden, ruler of a peaceful kingdom and educator of the masses, must solve 400 problems, one for each locked room she must pass through to escape a sorcerer's dungeon. The children can't turn the page to find out what happens next until they solve the problem themselves, whereupon Jayden magically receives their solution, presents the paper (in their handwriting) to the guardian monster, and moves to the next room to encounter the next guardian and problem. (Naturally, not all 400 problems are presented!) Once Jayden is free, the sorcerer Rechner sets out to avenge himself on the children, demanding that they either return Jayden to him or be imprisoned themselves. To avoid being trapped in his dungeon, they must solve more problems, the numerical solutions to whic h, transposed into letters, will spell a magic word to trap the sorcerer. Meanwhile the sorcerer tries to kill Alex, cutting the tow rope with a knife while he is waterskiing at camp.
Children looking for a simple story will find one here. There are brief tiffs between the friends and a bit of suspense as they sneak around their summer-camp at night, trying to find a place to work on their problems in peace. The characters are mostly outlines, nothing more. However, readers more demanding of depth in char. acters, situation, and plot, and aware, however inarticulately, of the presence or lack of internal consistency and logical integrity in a story's reality, will be likely to find ...
