What is SpongeBob SquarePants based on?

OK now spongebob started because Stephen Hillenburg was working for an aquarium and he had to make a weekly comic for the aquarium and the main character was bob the sponge and he was a round sea sponge. When Stephen quit and made the show he still had bob the sponge in his mind so he made a show about a sea sponge and called it SpongeBob SquarePants and in the TV show he is shaped like a kitchen sponge so that the younger viewers can better associate spongebob with a sponge as most of them probably haven't seen a sea sponge. So that is the origins of spongebob
