When he arrived on Earth to be adopted by Johnathon and Martha Kent he was given the name Clark Kent. He was named Clark because that was Martha's maiden name. When he moved to Metropolis and adopted his dual identity, he began fighting crime under the name Superman which, according to Superman: the Movie, was coined by Lois Lane in her first article about him. As Superman he has many other nicknames by which he is known, such as the Man of Steel and the Last Son of Krypton.
