Origan Treaty

The initial boundary was set by King George III. That boundary is (more or less) still in effect. The treaty ending the war of 1812 further clarified the border as far west as the Great Lakes. A boundary commission with international mediators set the border from Lake of the Woods to Puget Sound at 49 degrees N. Additional mediation clarified the border and divided the San Juan Islands and ensured that all portions of Vancouver Island and its close neighbors would be Canadian. The border between Alaska and Canada was moved southward along the coast from about 1898 until about 1905, when it reached its present limit.
Their was altogether two treaties that established the border between the United States and Canada the first was the Treaty of Paris of 1783 which settled the basic border, then the Webster- Ashburton Treaty of 1842 that settled the boundary between Maine and Canada, in 1844 the land dispute of the Oregon Territory was settled with the United Kingdom, Canada being a part of it at the time which established the present border between the state of Washington and Canada. Then the last time it was altered was in 1903 with a tribunal involving the United Kingdom, Canada and the United States, which settled the border between Canada and Alaska. That was the last time the border between the United States and Canada ever changed.

The border originated with the Treaty of Paris in 1783, which ended the American Revolutionary War between Great Britain and the separating colonies which would form the United States. The 45th parallel was established as the border between Quebec and New York State(including what is now Vermont). Westward expansion of both British North America and the United States saw the boundary extended west along the 49th parallel from the Northwest Angle at Lake of the Woods to the Rocky Mountains under the Treaty of 1818.
