1854 was the first year gold coins were struck at the San francisco Mint, the 1854-S $20 Double Eagle is fairly common. This issue was widely distributed and most coins show heavy wear. For an accurate assessment of value the coin needs to be seen and graded. In general retail values for low grade coins are $1,590.00-$1,910.00, better grade are $2,220.00-$3,690.00 and coins showing almost no wear run from $4,190.00-$6,310.00. Values are a market average and only for coins in collectible condition, coins that are bent, corroded, scratched, used as jewelery or have been cleaned have far less value if any to a collector or dealer

This piece has no numismatic collectible value. But there is a market for them, mostly at flea markets and e-Bay. I also see this stuff at coin shows with retail prices of $5.00-$10.00.
