It"s a species of Baboon- a proper term. By the way the love-interest jack of all trades character Bert ( do not confuse with Uncle Albert- two different characters) does NOT appear in the Travers novels. He was added by Disney as a love interest and Jack-Of-All-Trades, including chimney sweep- a sneeze away from a garbageman. Mary and Bert both seem to be rather on the leftist side.
In Chapter 2 of the P.L. Travers, Mary Poppins book I hold in my hand Mary on her Day Out meets Bert "the Match-Man" and steps nicely into one of his drawings for a lovely day together.
Also Hamadryad shed its scaly snake skin as a gift to Mary. So, at least in MP the Hamadryad appears to be a snake.

No, PL Travers is the author of the Mary Poppins book series. The character of Mary Poppins was inspired by Travers' own childhood governess.
When Walt Disney finally got movie rights to Mary Poppins, he took them for the series which included the first three books. Not specifically based on the second book, Mary Poppins Comes Back, it was included in the workup for Mary Poppins (1964).
