A spin-off movie is a movie based on a side plot or side character of another movie. For example, "The Scorpion King" is a spin-off of "The Mummy" series. The term spin-off is more often used for TV series, such as "Frasier" being a spin-off of "Cheers."

When a series finishes, sometimes a new series is made with the same themes and some of the same characters from the original series like when 'Friends' finished there was a spinoff series called 'Joey' that included one of the characters from 'Friends'.
