A flip-flop is a bistable multivibrator circuit, in other words it is stable in either the true or false state. They can be used for data storage, counting, scaling, and many other uses.
The first type of flip-flop was invented by William Henry Eccles and Frank Wilfred Jordan in 1918, for which they were granted patent GB148582 in 1920. They called it the Trigger Circuit, but when users connected the output to a speaker to verify correct operation if the Trigger Circuit was switching slowly the sound from the speaker was "flip, flop, flip, flop,..." which gradually became the more common name.
